Obituary

William E. Smith, 91, of Lake Placid went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the Balmoral Assisted Living in Lake Placid.  Bill was born on February 27, 1929 in Washington, DC and was the son of Marie (Thomas) and Jack E. Smith.  Bill served his country with honors in the US Marine Corps, retiring with 20 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant.  He served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.   After retiring from the service, Bill went to work with Eastern Airlines in Miami, where he was a computer systems analyst.  Bill retired from Eastern with 18 years of service.  He then moved to Lake Placid in 1985 from Miami.  Bill was a very active member at the South Oak First Baptist Church of Lake Placed where he was a deacon.  Bill enjoyed model railroading, a great round of golf and volunteering at the local nursing homes.  He loved to be with his family and friends any time they could get together.  Bill is preceded in death by the love of his life Gloria and is survived by his loving children; Carol Fontenot, William "Bill" E. Smith Jr., grandchildren; Sam Fontenot, Holly Sawyer, David Smith, Daniel Smith, Michael Smith, 11 great-grandchildren and a brother; Frank Smith.  A service to celebrate William's life will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the South Oak First Baptist Church of Lake Placid 119 E.
