William R. Raymond, QMC US Navy ret. passed away September 22, 2013 in Lake Placid, FL. Born August 10, 1923, he was the youngest son of Charles and Ann Raymond of Hampton, NH. He was preceded in death by his brothers Richard and Joseph and his sisters Edith and Pauline. His older brother, Richard was lost aboard the USS Dorchester, famed for the Immortal Four Chaplains in 1943. Chief Raymond was also preceded in death by his first wife Adelle in 2002 after 57 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Jeanine of 71/2 years. Together they enjoyed many of the Chief's WWII shipmate reunions ad were guests of honor at the memorial plaque unveiling of the USS Biloxi at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas in May 2012. Chief Raymond joined the US Navy at seventeen in 1940 and retired as Quartermaster Chief in 1960. During his career in the Navy he served aboard the Battleship New York, participating in the pre-war Neutrality Patrols along the East Coast. In 1943 he was assigned to the USS Biloxi, a light cruiser, and in 1944 became the youngest Quartermaster Chief in the Navy. He served as Chief QM of COMDESDIV 12 during the Korean War and completed his Navy career as the Master of the USS Waubansee at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, NH. Chief Raymond achieved a life long dream when he earned his private pilot's license in 1956. He was employed by Lafolla Industries of Portsmouth, NH in 1960 and retired in 1977. He was active in community affairs and served as Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee of the Portsmouth and Kittery Chamber of Commerce. He was President of the Piscataqua Post of the Society of American Military Engineers and a member of the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Yacht Club. He was a past director of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and a member of the Rockingham Co. Kennel Club. After 22 years on the beach, Chief Raymond returned to the sea with his sailboat Pinpoint. He and wife Adelle sailed the East Coast, Caribbean and to Brazil South America. The came ashore at Ft. Myers, FL and moved to Lake Placid, FL in 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Chief Raymond's life will be held, 11:00 AM Monday September 30, 2013 at St. James Catholic Church 3880 Placid View Drive, Lake Placid with Father Michael Cannon officiating. Military honors provided by the VFW Post 4300 Honor Guard. Inurnment will be at the Arlington National Cemetery.
