Obituary

Suzanne 'Susie' Elizabeth (Simon) Staples passed away December 26, 2024 in Lake Placid, Florida from complications related to dementia/natural causes.  A native of West Boylston, MA, Susie lived most of her life in Massachusetts, graduating from West Boylston High School and receiving her bachelor's degree in psychology from Lake Forest College; she also attended the Rhode Island School of Design.  Always athletic, trim, fit, and a great beauty, Susie excelled in sports and loved running; she was featured in the newspaper carrying the Olympic torch prior to the games being held in the US one year.  She met her future husband Russell Staples and they had a beautiful marriage for ten years, filled with laughter and love, running a framing business together in Jefferson, MA for a few years, attending sporting events with family and friends, playing tennis, sailing, and being active.  They eventually began their careers; Susie worked as a restaurant interior designer for 30 years at Trimark, where her charm and good taste won her many friends and grateful customers. Tragically, her husband Russ was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 36.  Susie never remarried and continued to be a part of the Staples family throughout her life as well as her own extended family. Russ had always wanted to live on a boat and was a great sailor; even though Susie did not sail, she bought a boat and lived on it for five years in Newport, Rhode Island to honor his dream. She remained close to girlfriends from her youth, including Shelley Sherman, with whom she rode horses as a young girl, and Marie (Cronin) Winston from West Boylston, with whom she would ride bikes up to the Pinecroft Dairy, where they would enjoy an ice cream cone together. Susie was extremely close to her mother, Barbara (Goodale) LaComfora, and her stepfather Frank LaComfora, both of West Boylston, who predeceased her. Susie spent summer vacations as a girl with her father Raymond  'Bud' Simon, who predeceased her, and her stepmother Ruth, in their home in Avondale Estates, Georgia. Susie lived on Cape Cod with members of the Staples family, including in Hyannis as well as at Lawrence Pond in Sandwich with Jackie Staples. Susie loved her Goodale family members in West Boylston and her cousin Bev described her as "lighting up the room like a Christmas tree" at their annual Goodale Christmas party, with her gorgeous smile and perfect teeth; that 1000-watt smile and engaging personality was with her until her passing.  Susie was a caring, loving, intelligent, articulate, intuitive, fun, positive, warm and generous person who always had a kind word and thoughtful deed towards her many friends and family members.  In her final years, she retired and moved to Naples, Florida where Spike and Dottie Staples had a winter condo; there she met their neighbor Bob Bauer, with whom she spent several years as a companion. She spent the last year and a half as a resident of Lake Placid Health and Rehab facility in Florida, where she was regularly visited by her sister-in-law Heidi Staples, who became her legal guardian; they loved each other like sisters. She leaves behind her beloved stepmother Ruth Simon, her extended Goodale relatives in and around West Boylston, many Staples relatives who considered her part of the family as well, and former coworkers, customers, friends, and neighbors.  The world is a better place for having had Susie in it, and she is now reunited with her husband Russ, the love of her life; may she rest in peace.  A celebration of her life will be held in Massachusetts in June.
