Susan was 70 years old and approaching her 71st birthday. She hoped to celebrate her 71st by sharing angle food cake and ice cream with her friends and nursing staff.

A resident of Lake Placid since the 1970's, Susan had decided to move into the assisted living home at Florida Hospital Heartland Division earlier this past fall. Then on January 25th she suffered a heart-attack and was moved to Hope Hospice Highland Regional Medical Center.

Susan was the youngest of three siblings. Her eldest brother Kenneth Ian Mackenzie along with his wife Margaret H. Mackenzie and niece Meg Mackenzie Prior were her closest relatives.

Susan was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and grew up in the West Indies. Her mother, Elaine Paterson Sweeney and stepfather John "Jay" Sweeney were residents of Lake Placid for many years until they passed away in the 1980's. During Susan's corporate years she lived in Louisville, KY and New York City.

Susan loved to cook and as a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu she excelled at it! Her zest for life was shared in the delicious dishes she prepared for herself and her friends.

A favorite passion of hers, in her earlier years, was sailing. A favorite place Susan liked to sail was the Tobago Keys, which was near her childhood home on St. Vincent Island in the Caribbean.

She attended Saint Andrews School in Maraval, Trinidad, a school her father, Alexander Kenneth Mackenzie had founded. Susan was very proud of her Scottish American Heritage.

Susan cultivated close friendships with many in the Lake Placid and Sebring area over the years. She loved a good political discussion, enjoyed solving the daily crossword puzzle with a couple of very dear close friends, and she liked meeting with friends at the No-Tap League Bowling Center. She was also an avid jigsaw puzzle enthusiast and joined friends regularly at bingo. The ocean was always special to her and driving over for a day at the beach was a favorite excursion. But it was the day-to-day friendships that she enjoyed and her ability to attend various community events that made Lake Placid her home.

Always a devout Episcopalian, Susan attended services and participated actively in church functions while she was capable.

Father Kurtz will conduct a memorial service for Susan Alison Mackenzie, open to family and friends, at Saint Agnes Episcopal Church in Sebring on February 15th, 2012 at 3:00pm with a Reception to follow.

Susan had a zest for life, was always interesting and fun to be with and will be missed by all those who knew her.
