Obituary

Sharleen Fonnesbeck, age 87, of Lake Placid, Florida passed away December 18, 2020 after a brave battle with Covid pneumonia.  Born in Rigby, Idaho to Elvin Leroy West and Emma Farber West on April 9, 1933, Sharleen was raised in Idaho Falls with her brothers, Lynn and Gary and sister, Marcia. She attended cosmetology school where she specialized in permanents. She was known for giving permanents to her daughters and friends for many years. Sharleen married Elmer Merrill (Mel) Fonnesbeck, on July 29, 1954. Daughters, Christine and Catherine, were born to the couple in 1955 and 1956 respectively, Steven followed in 1959, and Carol in 1964. Sharleen and Mel moved their babies to Florida in 1957 for Mel's work at Cape Canaveral. They spent a year in the Bahamas, where Steven was born, then settled in Coco Beach, Florida. The family left Florida in 1967 for work that took them to Utah, California, and North Carolina, before returning to Florida in 1971. While living in Orlando, Sharleen attended Seminole Community College where she earned her CNA. The couple settled in Lake Placid in 1988 to be close to their daughter, Catherine, and her family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served many years as a Primary teacher, teaching young children the gospel. Many of those children stayed in touch long after they were grown. Sharleen was very social and loved activities of all sorts with her friends and family.

Sharleen is survived by her sister, Marcia (Gary) Richins, American Fork, UT, children Christine (Mark) Blackhurst, Rowlett, TX, Catherine Rogers, Sebring, FL, Steven (Noreen) Fonnesbeck, Moon, PA/Sebring, FL, and son-in-law, Ray Hatchett, Orlando, FL. She has nine grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Sharleen is preceded in death by her husband, Mel, daughter, Carol Hatchett, son-in-law, Charlie Rogers, brothers, Lynn and Gary, and grandson, Jeffrey Allen Blackhurst.

The family would like to extend their appreciation for the compassionate care of Sharleen during her time at Lake Placid Health and Rehabilitation Center (now Orchid Cove). A memorial service will be held at a later date.
