Obituary

Russell Barnes, 87, of Lake Placid went to be with his Lord on Monday morning June 27, 2016 at the Vitas Hospice Unit in Sebring. Russell was the son of Mildred Davis and Hiram Barnes, who was born on July 10, 1928 in Waltham, Massachusetts. Russell at the young age of 16 enlisted in the Merchant Marines during WWII. After his enlisted period with the Merchant Marines, Russell started a long career with the US Navy, retiring after 41 plus years of service with the rank of Senior Chief. After his retirement from the Navy, Russell started several business including training and grooming dogs. Russ and his wife Sandra became residents of Lake Placid in August 1991 moving here from Broward County. Mr. Barnes was a member of the American Legion Placid Post 25 and the Masonic Lodge. Russell was of the Unitarian Church faith. Russell enjoyed being a peace officer and certified firefighter in Alaska, nautical knot tying and restoring his decommissioned naval vessel. Russell was a 350 ton captain who quite often captained for the Island Queen Sightseeing Tours out of Miami. Russell loved to be with his family and friends. Mr. Barnes is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Sandra; daughters, Sandra O'Brien, Linda Barnes, Wendy Barnes and Susan Barnes; son, Christian Barnes (Christine); many grand and great grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Barnes life with Military Honors by the US Navy will be held 11:30 AM, Friday, July 15, 2016 at the South Florida Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth.
