Obituary

Richard James Bernard "Dick", 83, of Lake Placid passed away Saturday morning July 9, 2011 at his residence. He was born on January 19, 1928 in Freeport, Maine to parents George and Marjorie (Woodrow) Bernard. Mr. Bernard's military career started at the end of WWII and extended to the beginning of Viet Nam, serving in the US Navy in the Cryptology department, retiring with 20 years of service. After retiring for the US Navy, he worked as a water treatment plant operator for several water departments in Broward County. He moved to Lake Placid in 1997 from North Miami Beach after retirement. Mr. Bernard was a history buff who enjoyed the military, history and discovery channels. He enjoyed working on his computer, keeping up with current events. Mr. Bernard was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association. Mr. Bernard is preceded in death by his son, Paul and is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Shirley, step-daughters; Anne Rappe, Susan Wolfe and Cathy Winfrey, 4 grandchildren, sisters; Barbara Percy, Carol Whitmer and Pat York, several nieces including Susan Rowe. "A celebration of the life of an Old Sailor" will be held 11 AM Saturday July 30, 2011 at the St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Episcopal Church 43 Lake June Rd., Lake Placid with Rev. Elizabeth Nelson celebrating. The family would like to thank the Florida Home Health workers for their services.
