IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maurice "Maurie"
Ray Bennett
May 6, 1933 – November 8, 2021
Beloved husband and father, Maurice "Maurie" Ray Bennett, 88, of Lake Placid went home to be with his Lord on Monday, November 8, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born the youngest of four children and therefore destined to be the last one to bathe in the bathtub on Saturday nights, Maurie arrived on May 6, 1933 at his family farm in Monterey, Indiana to Gertrude (Friebe) and Ray Bennett. He was close to his two brothers, Norman "Bud" and Rodger "Dean," and his sister, Erlene, being the eldest, had the task of keeping them all in line, though when she married and left home, there are stories of outhouse tipping adventures. Maurie served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Korean War. After serving in the Army, Maurie took his lifelong passion for flying and worked his way up the ranks where he retired as captain with USAir airlines. Though he loved his job, he wasn't fond of the required suit and tie and stayed true to his farming roots by wearing black cowboy boots as part of his airline uniform. He often said he lucked out to get a job with the airlines and hit the jackpot when he met a stewardess who became his devoted wife. After flying the skies for more than 25 years, he decided in retirement to explore the country by land and thoroughly enjoyed 30 years of RV life traveling all over the country and making friends at every campground. He moved to Lake Placid twenty years ago from Avon, Indiana. Maurie was a member of the Elks, Moose, American Legion, and a life member of the VFW. He was a lifelong tinkerer who could fix anything, a master at striking up conversation at the campground or while having a beer at the bar, and no-nonsense man of integrity, strong values, and a straight shooter who was a friend to all. He loved to be with his family and friends, rehashing old memories while making new ones. Maurie is survived by Lynne, his loving wife of 52 years, son; Brian Bennett, daughter; Diane Bohlen (John), and four grandchildren who always made him smile; Chris Bennett (Jessica), Grace, Will, and Katherine "Katie" Bohlen. Maurie was a "no-fuss" kind of man and in lieu of a service, would much rather you drink a beer in his name. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society givenow.lls.org or Good Shepherd Hospice -Lakeland Resource Center www.chaptershealth.org/Locations
