Mark J. Shaffer, 81, of Lake Placid joined the angels in heaven on Tuesday morning, Febrary 4, 2014. He was born on December 29, 1932 in Pittsburgh, PA to parents Gertrude and Wilbur Shaffer. Mark served his country proudly in the US Air Force as a medic with the rank of Sergeant. A retired owner of a trucking company, Mark moved to Lake Placid in 2000 from Davie, FL, where he fell in love and married his wife, Diane. He enjoyed golf, motor cycling and visiting the local watering holes, especially the Hideaway Lounge. He was also a member of the American Legion Placid Post 25 of Lake Placid. He was a happy go lucky and generous man, with a huge heart who loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a best friend and guardian angel to his wife and found comfort with her during his golden years. Memories of his fun loving nature and kind spirit will always be treasured by those who were lucky enough to know him. Mark is preceded in death by his loving children Mark Anthony Shaffer, Sherry Ann Shaffer and Venice Marie Shaffer. He is survived by his loving wife, Diane; daughter, Susan Barrett; son, Mark Alan Shaffer; 7 grandchildren; 3 great- grandchildren and a brother, Paul Shaffer. A service to celebrate Mark's life will be held at 1:00 PM this Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Scott Funeral Home 504 W. Interlake Blvd., Lake Placid with Ed Conklin officiating.
