Sgt. Major (Ret) Mary N. McCrite, passed away peacefully at Ross Memorial in Kennesaw, GA March 19, 2011.
Mary relocated to GA to be close to her family while receiving rehabilitative therapy.
A veteran of World War II, Sgt. Major (Ret) McCrite served in Europe in the Women's Army Corps from 1942 until l946. She achieved the rank of lst Lt. By the end of the War where she was offered the option of remaining in the Army with a rank reduction, or processing out into civilian status. Mary's deep devotion to her Country and her love for the U. S. Army made the decision an easy one. After 32 years service, SM McCrite retired in l974 with full honors and distinction at a ceremony on the parade grounds of Ft. McClellan (Anniston) AL

Following retirement, Mary McCrite went to live with her mother in Lake Placid, FL and became an active member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir. She acquired many friends and kept busy teaching at the local community college as well as carrying mail for the United States Postal Service.
A family birthday honoring her 91st year was held in January, 2011 and the memories of a life well spent was celebrated that day.
She always had the greatest respect for her countrymen and women and the United States of America. She is survived by her nephews David A. McCrite of Hampton, GA, Richard I. McCrite of Whittier, NC, G. Eric McCrite of Kennsaw, GA and her nieces, Charlotte A,. Oxford of Marietta, GA and Kathryn E. Matthews of Kennesaw GA along with their children and grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday March 24 from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM at the Scott Funeral Home 504 W. Interlake Blvd., Lake Placid. Services celebrating Mary's life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Lake Placid 119 E. Royal Palm Street at 2:00 P.M. March 25 with Rev. Bret Morley celebrating.. Internment with military honors at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lake Placid, FL.
