Obituary

Lawrence John Hornung, Jr., 89, of Lake Placid passed on to heaven on February 9, 2015. He was born in Louisville, KY on October 25, 1925 to Lawrence John Hornung, Sr. and Florence Schabel Hornung.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Betty Hornung; 5 children, Kenneth, Mark, Janet, Gwendolyn and Saul; 4 grandchildren, Daniel, Andrew, Jessica and Alyssa; and 2 great-grandchildren, Ethan and Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older sister, Bernice. His younger sister, Mary Elaine, still resides in Louisville, KY along with several nieces and nephews.

Called to the service of his country during WWII, as a yeoman 2nd class, and served on the USS Fulton and USS Holland before being honorably discharged. He then entered civilian service at Ft. Knox, KY in the field of research and development. Three years later he was recalled back into active duty for the Korean Conflict. He was a transport pilot, flying goods and equipment across the pacific for our troops overseas.

After serving his country a second time, he rejoined civil service as a system analyst at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County, FL. He moved to Brevard with his family in 1959 and became intricately involved in our nations exploration of space in the 60's and 70's.

Upon his retirement from civil service, he relocated to Lake Placid, FL where he met and married the love of his life, Betty Donze Jeffress on January 13, 1996 at St. James Catholic Church. They enjoyed dancing and traveling, and together explored many exotic locations around the globe. They also enjoyed big band music, football and flying. But their greatest joy was their love of family.

A funeral service to celebrate Lawrence's life will be held 3:00 PM, Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Scott Funeral Home 504 W. Interlake Blvd., Lake Placid with Father Michael Cannon Celebrating. A gathering for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the VFW Post 4300 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Lawrence's memory to the Vitas Community Connection Hospice 4450 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., Suite 250 Melbourne, FL 32934.
