CDR S.L. (Larry) Spear, US Navy, Retired passed away Wednesday April 28, 2010 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. A native of Moore Haven, FL, Mr. Spear was born on April 1, 1935 to parents, Dallas and Rowena Spear. Larry was an aeronautical engineer graduate of Parks College of Aviation and Engineering in St. Louis, MO with a Maser's Degree from the University of Southern California. Larry was a Navy Aviator and did three combat tours in Viet Nam and SE Asia, flying off the carriers, USS Oriskany and the USS Ticonderoga. He was awarded several meritorious medals and commendations for his service. He was a graduate of the Navy's test pilot school and was an instructor for several different airplanes used in the service. He taught the Master's Program at Embry-Riddle in Miami. Larry was a member of the Tailhooks Association, EAA, AOPA and the Elks. Mr. Spear is survived by his loving wife Carol, daughter Andrea and husband David of Maryland, daughter Amy of Virginia, two grandchildren Jordan and Jacqueline, 3 stepchildren, Lisa, Thomas and Andrew, brother, Carl and family and sister, Ginger and family. A service celebrating Larry's life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday May 8, 2010 at the Scott Funeral Home 504 W. Interlake Blvd, Lake Placid with Pastor Kevin Mahoney celebrating. Military Honors will follow the services by the VFW Post 4300 Honor Guard.
