Obituary

Joseph Augutis, 92, of Lake Placid, Florida, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at AdventHealth Lake Placid Hospital. Born on June 6, 1933, in North Haledon, New Jersey, Joseph was the beloved son of Veronica (Similis) and Peter Augutis. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and integrity, values that would guide him throughout his life. Joseph proudly served his country with honor in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he began a long and dedicated career in the communications industry. Joseph worked with the New Jersey phone system and went on to retire as a second level manager with Bell South in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Joseph’s work ethic and commitment earned him the respect of colleagues and friends. For many years, Joseph was a weekend resident of Highlands County, eventually making Lake Placid his permanent home in 2024 after relocating from Fort Lauderdale. He found joy in spending time in North Carolina pursuing his many hobbies. Joseph had a deep love for learning and exploration, whether it was mining for gems and precious stones, tending to his orchids and garden, or enjoying target shooting. Joe always included his whole family in important decisions and Joy and the kids traveled along with him on many vacations, adventures and fossil/mineral hunts. It wasn’t unusual to see the van pulled over on the side of the road with everyone out taking pictures and collecting local minerals. Joseph was preceded in death by his loving son, Steve. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Doris Joy (Schweizer), his sons, Scott and Kevin (Ericka); his cherished grandchildren, Kevin Jr. (20), Aubrey (20), and Elijah Joseph (9), his niece, Jennifer Creamer Croft and extended family in Lithuania. A funeral service to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Scott Funeral Home in Lake Placid, Florida. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to service time. Military honors will be presented by the VFW Post 4300 Homor Guard. Joseph will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his enduring curiosity about the world around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
