John L. Smithyman, Jr., 88, of Lake Placid, peacefully went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. He was born on February 11, 1923, in Pittsburgh, PA to parents Catherine (Ford) and John L, Sr. Mr. Smithyman served his country in the US Army during WWII. A retired Postal Clerk with the US Post Office, he moved to Lake Placid in 1982 from Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Smithyman was an active member of the St. James Catholic Church, VFW Post 3880, American Legion Placid Post 25, Lake Placid Moose Lodge No. 2374 and the Lake Placid Elks Lodge No. 2661. An avid sportsman, Mr. Smithyman loved spending time with family and friends. Mr. Smithyman is preceded in death by sisters, Dolly Susko, Audrey Haines and Eileen O'Toole, and brothers, Thomas, Harry Joe and Billy. He was married to the love of his life Pat for 64 years, and together they have loved four children; Patricia Smithyman Zito (John), John C. Smithyman (Diana Deceased), Daniel Smithyman (Betsy), and Michael Smithyman (Chris). Grandfather to 13, and Great Grandfather to 9,; sister-in-law, Pat Smithyman and sister; Carol Hill (Steven). The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM, May 31, 2011, at the Scott Funeral Home, 504 W. Interlake Blvd., Lake Placid. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, 12 Noon, June 1, 2011, at St. James Catholic Church, 3380 Placid View Drive, Lake Placid with Fr. Michael Cannon celebrating. Military honors will follow presented by the VFW Honor Guard Post 4300.
