Obituary

John Francis Culkin John F. "Jack" Culkin died peacefully at the age of 93 on October 1, 2023, in Sebring, Florida. Beloved by many, Jack lived a long life of service to his family, friends, loved ones and the communities where he lived. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Chloe Morton Culkin, his children, Bridget Peezick (Ira), Sean Culkin (Kathi), Frank Culkin, Lawrence Culkin (Eriko), William Culkin (Jennifer) Jill Yde (John); his grandchildren, Ian, Max and Sean Peezick, Aidan Culkin, and Samuel and Jacob Rosenbaum. Born of Irish descent on February 10, 1930 in Avoca, PA to Francis I. and Helen McAndrew Culkin, he graduated from Avoca High School then served in the National Guard and US Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War until honorably discharged in 1952. Jack attended Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, graduating in June of 1956. During his long career as a pharmacist, Jack worked at several area hospitals including Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden and Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin. He held directorships at Burlington County Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly and Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton Township. In the 1980s, Jack founded a pharmacy inventory company, Jack Culkin Associates, which he built into the leading firm in New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania. Jack married fellow Avoca native Mary F. McDermott in 1955 and started raising a family. In 1958, the couple purchased one of the first Levitt Homes built in Levittown, NJ, later Willingboro. A decade later the family moved to Rancocas Village with their five children where Jack immediately fell in love with the village. He served as a member of the Rancocas Emergency Squad and secretary of the Rancocas Fire Company. Jack was a founding member and later chairman of the Rancocas Civic Association which steered the town into being recognized as a state and National Historic District in 1973. Jack also served on the Westampton Township Board of Education and township zoning board. Rancocas Village remained dear to his heart for the rest of his days. In 1989 Jack met and married Chloe Ann Morton while both worked at Southern Ocean County Hospital. They lived and worked in Mt Holly, NJ for many years, eventually splitting their time between Mt Holly and Lake Placid, Florida after retirement. Together they enjoyed hobbies, traveling, and spoiling their grandsons. Jack was a talented dancer, avid gardener, reader, dog-owner, walker, canoeist, and kayaker. He had a long running affection for the Rancocas Creek, which he lived near or next to and paddled upon for more than half of his life. He was a dedicated life-long learner who took classes in conversational Italian, real estate, sailing, American sign language, and even swimming lessons in his 80's. He loved walking his dog, taking hikes in the woods, and exploring the little known natural byways of the places he lived. The loss of Jack will be greatly felt not just by his immediate family but also by his many nieces and grand-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, friends, neighbors, and former colleagues. He was a reliable presence at many a wedding, graduation ceremony and other life events. Jack was genuinely interested in others and stayed in touch with many. He was always there with a smile or a joke and story to tell. In service to his community, Jack acted as the chair of a United Fund campaign at Lourdes which raised funds for distribution to charitable, public health and welfare agencies. He and his sons helped raise money for the American Cancer Society, going door-to-door in every corner of Westampton Township. He was also named to the Board of Trustees of Burlington County Drug Advisory Council and was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts in Westampton. Jack was preceded in death by sisters Lois Haggerty and Rosemary Dommermuth and brothers Joseph, and Francis Culkin. Visitation on Friday, October 27th at 9:30 am at Sacred Heart Church in Mt Holly, NJ with funeral mass to follow at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals On Wheels of Sebring Florida, an organization for which Jack volunteered for many years.
