Obituary

James Thomas Helminger, known as Tom, 86, of Lake Placid, Florida, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at his residence. Born on May 26, 1938, in Wauconda, Illinois, he was the son of Katherine (Handgen) and Forest James Helminger.
Tom proudly served his country in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army with honor. After his military service, he began a long and fulfilling career in the elevator industry, retiring as a service repairman.
Tom, along with his wife, made Lake Placid his home for the past twenty-five years after moving from Indiana. He enjoyed spending his days fishing, helping others in the retirement community, and playing poker with his friends. Above all, Tom cherished seeking out creative opportunities that could make a lasting impact on others.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara; daughter, Connie Theisen; sons, Jim (Penni), Mark, Matt, and Jon (Michelle); 11 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Tom was a man of Christian faith and a proud supporter of veterans. He was famous for his "legendary tinkering" in the garage, where he would brainstorm countless ideas. One of his fondest memories was his trip to Alaska, a place he longed to return to.
A celebration of life will be held in Florida in May 2025.
Tom will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
