Obituary

Jack Ray Shives, 82, of Lake Placid, Florida, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 23, 2023, at Joanne's House at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Florida. Jack was born April 1,1940 in Greenville, Ohio to the late Leonard L. Shives and Larie (Skillman) Shives. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Betty Shives. Jack was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norm and Audrey Drew. Jack has been a resident of Lake Placid since 1974, moving here from Ohio. He had retired after living a very full, active, and robust life. It was once said that cats were jealous of Jack because they only had nine lives compared to Jack's many more. Jack enjoyed life to the fullest and cherished his beloved family. In the 60's, in Greenville, Ohio, Jack was a manager at Baird construction and is responsible for many of the iconic buildings in the local area that are still there today. In the 70's, in the same community, Jack branched out on his own and began several businesses that are still in business presently. They include but are not limited to Creative Cabinets and Creative Carpets. Jack eventually moved his family to Lake Placid, Florida, where he did the same in creating business. One of which was Caladium Cabinets. Jack became a local businessperson and entrepreneur in the Lake Placid area for many years. During those years, every summer Jack would take his family to his humble abode at his beloved cabin at Twin Pines resort in Cloyne, Ontario, Canada, a destination that he also went to as a child. There he and his family would spend extended vacations fishing, boating, riding motorcycles and swamp buggies, and doing whatever else Jack's mind could conjure up. One of Jack's greatest feats was conquering the Calabogie Trail, a feat that he would repeat later in life with his family by his side. Jack wore many hats as a businessman and had lots of dreams. One of Jack's dreams/accomplishments was to create Yesteryear Cottage Homes which also included witnessing Balmoral Assisted Living Facility becoming a reality here in Lake Placid, FL. In later years he returned to the southwest Ohio area and led the construction on a palace known fondly as the farm. This took an entire year to do so. After that Jack traveled to the Cayman Islands to work for Dolphin Cabinetry. It is important to note his beloved wife, Jan, was with him on all his adventures. She even supported him on his misadventures as well. While in The Cayman Islands Jack would neither confirm nor deny that many of the cruise ships would stop there just to visit Jan and him. Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Janet (Drew). Also surviving are his cherished children: Kim Harless (Pat) of Greenville Ohio. Scott Shives (Evie) of Hendersonville, N.C., Ron Shives (Hannah) of Columbus, Ga., Todd Shives (Paula), Mark Shives (Shawn), and Susan McCarta (Sean), all from Lake Placid Florida. Jack is also survived by many cherished grandchildren (21) and great grandchildren (25), all of whom know who they are. Nephews John (Rene), Dave (Jill), and Ann (John), are also surviving. There are also many other nieces, nephews, and friends surviving. Jack will be sorely missed by everyone except for the small mouth bass located in several lakes in Canada especially where most of his adventures happened: Deerock Lake, Lingham Lake, and Lake Mississagagon, who when learning of Jack's passing will let out a collective sigh of relief. A visitation for anyone who wants to drop by to celebrate and reflect on Jack's life with his family will be held 11:00 AM till Noon, Saturd ay, 1, 2023 at the Scott Funeral Home, 504 W, Interlake Blvd., Lake Placid. Fu rther services will be held this summer in Greenville, Ohio.
