Frank J Howard Jr. 97 of Lake Placid went home to be with his Lord November 24, 2020. Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania on August 1, 1923 to Frank J. and Selena U. Horward. He attended Dormont High School, enrolled at Ohio University in 1942. He joined the ROTC program there but in February 1943, he enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard a Sub-chaser PSC 1383, posted in the Atlantic Ocean until discharged in 1946. He graduated from the school of Journalism at Ohio University 1949. He first served as a copy editor at the Athens Messenger in Athens, Ohio and then as a courthouse reporter of the Martins-Ferry-Bellaire time; he was also editor of the St. Clairsville Gazette. In 1951 he joined the News Journal in Mansfield, Ohio. He served as a reporter, wire editor, Sunday editor, managing editor, and finally editor of the newspaper. He moved to Fort Lauderdale Fl in 1976 where he was an editor at the Sun Sentinel newspaper, winning several national awards until his retirement in 1993. He was a avid sailor, physical fitness advocate, sportsman, gardener, and a former director of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Program. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Ann Yost Horward. He is survived by a brother, Donals D. and sister-in-law, Annabel of Tallahassee, and a sister Barbara D. Templeton of New York. He was preceded by his parents, Frank J. and Selena U. Horward, and a brother William J. Internment will be at the Allegheny National Cemetery, in Pennsylvania. Words of comfort to the family can be made by visiting www.scottfuneralservices.com
