Evelyn Jeanne Torrey, 75, of Lake Placid, passed away with her daughter and a dear friend by her side, Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at the Lake Placid Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Evelyn was born on September 24, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts and she was the daughter of Floyce (Love) and Robert Torrey. Her rich life included world travel, especially to her beloved Haiti, living in Korea and a half-dozen US States, and driving countless miles to spend time with family and friends. Evelyn has been a part-time resident of Lake Placid since 2015 and becoming a full-time resident in 2020, moving up from South Florida, her home area since 1987.
Her education and employment goals were both rooted in service to others, culminating in a Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2002 and a career as college professor until retirement. Evelyn was an active member of several Christian churches, who enjoyed playing the organ and contributing her proofreading skills and widespread knowledge and experience. Evelyn was a people person who never knew a stranger.
Preceded in death by her loving wife Mary as well as both of her parents, she is survived by her children Patty Basford (Jesse), Peter Tracey, John Tracey (Tanya), and two grandchildren, her brother Arthur and his significant other Mary-Anne, and others to whom she was a bonus mother or grandmother.
